Minehead’s Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
Clock Tower gets go ahead
The proposed Queen’s Jubilee Clock Tower is one step nearer reality, having recently been granted planning permission, by Somerset County Council and West Somerset County Council, to be able to be built on the sea front area opposite the West Somerset Railway station.
Sally Bainbridge, chairman of the Jubilee Clock Tower project, says how thrilled the committee is that permission has been granted to allow the go ahead for, what can only be described as a once in a lifetime opportunity to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne. Sally says that any town ‘worth its salt’ must, in some way, mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
This clock tower, which has been purposely designed to complement its maritime position, will be Minehead’s way of doing this, and will remain so for many decades.
With the necessary publicity it could come to the attention of the nation, which can only boost the tourist trade that Minehead so strongly depends upon.
Peter Ferguson, a conservation architect born in Minehead, is responsible for the design which is based on a Screwpile Lighthouse. Apart from his many years of experience of maritime architecture, he is co-founder of the South West Marine Historical Society.
